"We were just totally overwhelmed by it" if "we did not want to wait for the festival full of show," Jacqui Lofaro, founder and executive director of the Hamptons 2 Take Documentary Film Festival, told an audience full studio LTV 3 Cinema in Wainscott last month.

They were there to see "under our skin."

The documentary on Lyme disease. "He peels the layers of what is an epidemic," said Ms. Lofaro. It is powerful, the winner of 20 awards of the film festival. The New York Times called it "heartbreaking" and said he "s' attack the medical establishment."It does not only aim, he scores a bull's-eye.

"Under our Skin" is a kind of counterpart to the health of "Inside Job", 2011 Academy Winner for Best Documentary. "Inside Job" depicts the economic crisis we have suffered as a colossal crime perpetuated by companies eager to Wall Street linked to and protected by the federal figures.

"Under our Skin" paints a similar crime involving enormous health care.It documents how desperate need of a long-term treatment with the disease of Lyme is discouraged by the insurance companies related health of people in the medical establishment - including physicians with whom they are connected financially.

Not only do they take the position that the long-term care for victims of Lyme disease is unnecessary, and only a few weeks of treatment with antibiotics is all it takes, they punished the dedicated physicians who provided necessary long-term care, the cinema.

It shows how health insurers will not pay for long-term care of people with Lyme disease.Our medical system has been twisted to include such unnecessary care. Physicians who provide have been losing their medical license. A huge scandal is exposed.

If Lyme disease is detected early, several weeks of treatment with antibiotics, in most cases, to take care of her. But as the documentary suggests, early detection is not always easy. About half of people bitten by a tick carrying Lyme do not develop the witness fly rash at the site of the bite. And testing for the disease are often unreliable.

571 Projects is pleased to present Melora Griffis: wings and murmurs, an exhibition of new oil paintings. Griffis’ work has been widely exhibited in solo and group exhibitions, and this is her first solo show with 571 Projects. In this body of work the artist explores themes of women’s subjugation, home, and loss through an exuberant palette and painterly brushstroke. Drawing on the visual traditions of German Expressionist painters including Otto Dix and George Grosz, Griffis paints with a vivid and unusual palette. This body of work comprises figurative and abstract paintings on canvas and on paper in which she explores the representational qualities of abstraction and the non-objective qualities of figuration. In Bruised Kite Hope Flares (2010, acrylic, pastel and graphite on paper, 40” x 26”) glimpses of forms and colors peek through layers of white paint as though through a tear in a curtain, hinting at things forgotten or repressed. Unsichtbar (2011, oil on linen, 46” x 30”) shows a seated woman, hands folded in her lap. The figure is anonymous, her head painted over in white and her identity lost. Griffis’ work is emotionally unguarded, tapping into underlying psychological states. Her paintings are high stakes and aesthetically dramatic pieces of fragmented narratives depicted in loose and masterly brushstrokes. A native New Yorker, Griffis received her BFA from The Rhode Island School of Design and participated in the Mentor Program at Santa Monica College of Design, Art, and Architecture. She has had solo exhibitions at the Pamela Williams Gallery (Amagansett, NY), Lizan Tops Gallery and AE Gallery (both East Hampton, NY), Whitney Art Works (Greenport, NY), The Boylan Gallery (Rhinebeck, NY), and Blue Heron Arts Center (New York, NY).
