UnitedHealth Looks to Boost Medicare Sales Selling Hearing Aids

Oct. 3 (Bloomberg) -- UnitedHealth Group Inc., the largest U.S. health insurer by revenue, said it will sell a line of low- cost hearing aids to serve an estimated market of 36 million Americans with hearing loss.

The devices will be available to UnitedHealth customers through Medicare managed care and prescription drug plans for no out-of-pocket cost to some consumers and a co-pay of up to $649 for others depending on their plan, the company said in a statement. Hearing aids typically sell for from $2,000 to $4,000, according to the Minnetonka, Minnesota-based insurer.

UnitedHealth supplies Medicare benefits to almost 7 million consumers, making it the biggest provider under the U.S. health insurance plan for the elderly and disabled. The company is introducing the low-cost hearing aid program as Medicare recipients begin to choose managed-care plans for 2012 coverage in a selling season expected to be competitive after the first of the baby-boom generation turned 65.

"Even before the health reform, we have heard through the advising customers that it was an advantage they wanted," said Lisa Tseng, CEO of HealthInnovations Hi, a newly formed unit of UnitedHealth handling sales and Marketing of the hearing aid. "The high cost of hearing aids and the difficulty of the test means that people put off treatment. Our goal is to make it affordable and easy. "

The company is also seeking a patent for a hearing test that consumers can make at home using a computer.

Value-Add to Business

UnitedHealth spokesman Tyler Mason declined to comment on how much the new business may add in revenue or earnings or how it may influence the selection of managed care plans for 2012. The company’s stock is up almost 28 percent since the beginning of the year before today’s trading.

“We didn’t project out the numbers,” Mason said in a telephone interview. “We’re addressing a pressing need for a sizable population in the U.S. and we envision a value-add to our current line of business.

The Badger Herald: Free flu shots for students offer protection

As the flu season rapidly approaches the University of Wisconsin campus, University Health Services is suiting up for battle by offering free vaccinations for students and staff in Madison.

Free seasonal flu shots will be offered to all registered students, faculty and staff throughout the fall and winter season, a statement from UW said.

UHS Executive Director Sarah Van Orman said students and staff should take advantage of the free shots because of the implications that could come from falling ill with the flu.

“We think flu shots are important for public health,” Van Orman said."Nice studies were conducted at the University of Minnesota, which [show] in a given year, one third of students will report negative consequences due to the cold or the flu."

She said that these consequences may affect not only the health of a student as well as academic progress, especially because the campus flu can spread so quickly.

The vaccine against influenza are paid by the free health care costs for students, but UW employees are able to receive their health insurance plan, Orman said.

UHS offers a separate company, Home Health United, to give the shots to employees, she said. Employee flu shot clinics will be held Oct. 3 through Nov. 10 at more than a dozen locations around campus.

Flu shots will be given until the middle of February, but Van Orman said flu season in Wisconsin begins in mid-December.

Students are reminded to bring their student ID and to wear a t-shirt or a shirt that can be rolled up, the statement said. The first flu shot clinic will be for students only and will take place this Friday at the Southeast Recreational Facility. Students are allowed to stop by anytime between noon and 5 p.m. without an appointment.

Free walk-in against influenza in UHS will also be available for students from October 3 through November 4. UHS and set up immunization clinics at a number of other locations around the campus, the statement said.
