School employees get new insurance options
The long-term care insurance program will provide coverage for care delivered by nursing facilities, assisted living facilities, adult day care, home health care agencies and hospice programs. Those eligible for the coverage are state employees; their spouse; parents, including in-laws; dependent children; and dependent survivors. The plan includes a 90-day elimination period when covered individuals would be responsible for covered services before benefits are paid, similar to a health insurance deductible. "We've had a lot of problems with insurance payroll deductions. We had one instance where an employee quit and was kept on health, life and dental insurance for 24 months. There were several other errors where teachers weren't deducted the correct amount and we've had problems with over-deductions," Brewer said. "I want the employees to have availability to payroll deduction. How do we know we won't be sitting here a year from now learning that someone was deducted the wrong amount? Is someone going to be responsible for reconciling this and making sure that the information is to payroll and deductions are set up properly?" The mistakes are not always in paperwork from the school system or mistakes made in the finance department, she added. There have been several instances where paperwork was sent to the state to take an employee off the insurance programs and the state continued to keep those individuals on. Some of the over billed insurance premiums have been refunded to the school system. Employees will also have access to vision insurance through USAble, which is already contracted with the school system. Board action was not necessary to approve the program that would provide vision insurance for one year through a pre-tax payroll deduction program. Monthly rates begin at $7.91 for employee only up to $23.72 a month for a family vision plan. Employees must commit to a full year of coverage in order to participate.Tn State Teacher Health Insurance - News

Shanker Blog » For Many Teachers, Reform Means Higher Risk ...
The Albert Shanker Institute , endowed by the American Federation of Teachers and named in honor of its late president, is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to three themes - excellence in public education, unions as advocates for quality, and freedom of association in the public life of democracies. With an independent Board of Directors (composed of educators, business representatives, labor leaders, academics, and public policy analysts), its mission is to generate ideas, foster candid exchanges, and promote constructive policy proposals related to these issues.

Indiana teachers are still allowed to negotiate. The problem is that the Legislature limit the negotiations on wages and benefits. Working conditions (and everything is included under that name) are off limits (This is called the dismantling of unions).
If course, there is almost nothing left to bargain. The state has made permanent drastic cuts in local schools. Most teachers have worked with salaries frozen without relief in sight.
The state has created a new system of compensation designed to “reward” effective teachers. Ironically, the system will actually make the average lifetime earnings of a career teacher even lower than it already is.
You can’t reward good teachers unless you have the money to do so.
inteach,
Yes, you’re of course correct. The same goes for Wisconsin and other states. Instead of eliminated, I should have said “largely eliminated.” To me, limiting bargaining to wages is tantamount to eliminating it, but that doesn’t change the facts.I corrected the post in a couple of points, with apologies.
