State Legislatures Proposing “No Birth Control Coverage” Bills
Republicans hate the Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act. No matter how much of it was based on concepts they proposed and embraced in the past, they still hate it because it was passed by a Democratic Congress under a Democratic President. They are fighting it on the grounds that the government cannot tell people to buy something from a private company, you know, like having to buy auto insurance or you get your driver’s license suspended.
The ginned-up battle over providing birth control coverage in a health insurance policy bought by a religious organization for its lay employees has shown Republicans another way to fight the ACA. Now, lawmakers in Idaho, Missouri and Arizona want to pass laws that exempt any business or insurance provider from providing birth control, abortion or sterilization coverage.
Idaho Representative Carlos Bilbao, who is sponsoring the bill there, said “In its present state, the health care bill is an affront to my religious freedoms.” He is insisting on the right to impose his religion on everyone else in the state. That’s Bilboa’s idea of religious freedom.
These bills are copies of the one proposed at the Federal level by Missouri Congressman Roy Blunt. It allows the insurance companies to opt out of the contraceptive coverage if “they” have “moral objections.” One idiot question – since when do companies have morals? Companies are not people, no matter what Mitt Romney says. They cannot have a position based on personal religious belief or morality. Their executives may have personal opinions, but not the company itself, not unless it has a single or one-family owner. Publicly traded companies, companies that issue stock that anyone can buy, have even less chance of having a religious identity.
My younger daughter works for a family-owned company that is Christian in identity, the way Chick-fil-A is Christian. Her health insurance covers birth control. The only way this kind of legislation would work is if the company were able to determine if the pills were being prescribed for a medical condition other than birth control and allow those prescriptions to be paid under the terms of the insurance policy.
