Unemployed face few insurance options
Private insurance premiums for families rose nine percent this year, according to a report released last week.
For families trying to survive on unemployment checks, food stamps or part-time, low wage work, with private insurance becomes almost impossible.
"We are seeing many clients who accept positions that are not compatible with their education, previous experience or history of wages to obtain health insurance," said Ray Abbas, Tennessee Career Center Director of Knoxville.
There are not many realistic options for people who are unemployed or underemployed, said Beth Uselton, Executive Director of the Health Care Campaign Tennessee.
"There are many, many people who simply have no insurance options if they are unemployed," said Uselton.
However, options do not include TennCare, the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) and the extension of insurance coverage options in the short term.

The state Medicaid program is primarily oriented towards low-income children up to age 18 and pregnant women and persons with disabilities, said Larry Crooks, director for the Office of the Knox County Department of State Human Services.
"A woman who is pregnant can still make $ 1670 per month and still be eligible for care throughout pregnancy," said Crooks. "We try to do everything we can to cover children."
Children in Tennessee are covered up to 250 percent of poverty level, or nearly $ 56,000 for a family of four, for TennCare and CoverKids, program for children of Tennessee Health Insurance (SCHIP ).
TennCare also offers coverage for parents, Crooks said, families with little income.
A family of three can make up to $ 631 per month and still qualify, but unemployment checks can be several times greater than this amount, Crooks said.
Crooks said applications have increased by some since the recession began, but the county has not seen nearly the influx it has with food stamps.
