Genomic Health colon cancer test wins Medicare coverage
, Which administers Medicare health insurance for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, established a formal coverage policy for all Medicare patients with stage II colon cancer.The coverage is effective for claims as of Sept. 18.
“Palmetto’s coverage decision reflects the importance of evidence-based coverage and has the potential to transform care for Medicare colon cancer patients while saving the health care system dollars,” Genomic Health CEO Kim Popovits said in a press release .
More than 10,000 doctors as of June 30 had ordered 200,000 Oncotype DX tests for breast and colon cancer, the company said. Oncotype DX costs about $4,000. In colon cancer, it looks at 12 genes to predict the likelihood that the cancer will recur.
Genomic Health also has tested Oncotype DX, introduced in 2004 for breast cancer and in early 2010 for colon cancer , as a kidney and prostate cancer test.
