Letters: Tout prevention to control health costs

More than good genes has permitted me to spend about $600 on all of my medical costs over my 54 years. I work at my health, as all should. My wife and I have intentionally never purchased health insurance and been well rewarded financially over the years. We have paid off our mortgage early and all other debt. We are generally having a good life. Should any family member become seriously ill, we will deal with it and negotiate the price in cash as we believe all should do.

The next step after prevention is to get rid of third-party payers. Employers also need to be relieved of their obligation to provide health benefits. The medical system itself needs to "take the hit" and be forced to lower its costs. The only way to achieve this, other than using the system less, is to shed ourselves of insurance so the endless flow of cash comes to a grinding halt. After all, one cannot shop for groceries, pay a $10 co-payment and receive $500 worth of food.

Willing to pay for the best

I am a 15-year cancer survivor. Remember, we are not cured, just survivors. In your editorial on the "jump" in health premiums, you posit a system "forcing them (us) to shop around" for cheaper care.

Letters to the editor

USA TODAY receives about 300 letters each day. Most arrive via e-mail, but we also receive submissions by postal mail and fax. We publish about 35 letters each week.

We often select comments that respond directly to USA TODAY articles or opinion pieces. Letters that are concise and make one or two good points have the best chance of being selected, as do letters that reflect the vibrant debate around the nation on a particular subject.

We aim to make the letters platform a place where readers, not just writers representing institutions or interest groups, have their say.

Needing help with denied health insurance? | Health News

So my 3 year old daughter and I have been on my moms Kaiser Employee health insurance her all of her life, me for 6 years. I just aged out. I sought out individual health care, after talking to my dad I opted to go with the more expensive Kaiser plan. I filled out the application…and was denied because I “sought medical attention for a minor illness in the past 12 months” I thought they were talking about migraines which I have and figured I would sign a waiver for coverage for those…but no…I went to the doctor last febuary for the flu and they denied me because of that…so now even though I have the means to pay for it I can’t get health insurance…I was told I can have my situation reassessed…has anyone had luck with that??? I am thinking about calling them and saying that I have been with them for 6 years (not that they make money since they don’t charge the employee for the insurance) but that it continuity of care for both my child and myself and this is bad for business…

Any thoughts??? or suggestions?? I’m 25 5’7″ and 140, non-smoker, exercise 4x a week, teacher in private school

Answer by krazegurl_ds You should have been able to get a letter of continuous coverage from them when you switched from being under your mom to applying for your own insurance.Companies use this letter to show that you had coverage for a period of time.

EDIT: I would look to providing health care, I have used when my job did not offer health insurance and their rates are quite reasonable and they had decent coverage, I just want them google. I see commercials on TV for them all the time.

Is not a private insurance Grand? I experienced what you describe. It's crazy how insurance companies can arbitrarily cut you like a bad habit, if you actually use their coverage.
