Thursday, Sept. 15What happened: Republicans in the state House start another attempt to block taxpayer-paid health insurance to domestic partners living with public employees.
Passed 64-44 on a mostly party line vote, the measure would forbid public employers from extending the benefits to unmarried partners of employees, same sex or opposite sex. The Michigan Civil Service Commission voted early this year to allow domestic partner benefits for some state employees starting in October. Republicans tried to overturn the decision but couldn’t get the two-thirds majority vote needed in the House.
Why it matters: Supporters say the measure reflects the will of voters who decided in 2004 to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman. But it’s unclear how much impact the legislation would have. The proposal is written to apply to “the greatest extent consistent with constitutionally allocated powers.” Democrats say it is unconstitutional and would be challenged in court.

Michigan moves toward Feb. 28 presidential primary Thursday Sept. 15
What happened: Lawmakers move a step closer to confirming Feb. 28 as the date for the state’s 2012 Republican presidential primary. The Republican-led Senate approves a bill setting the date 25-12. The measure now goes to the Republican-led House.
