Towards a better healthcare
The allopathic health care system in J&K is only half a century old when Kashmir medical college was established in Srinagar by Bakhshi Sahib the legendary Prime Minster of Kashmir. No doubt we had SMHS hospital a chest disease and Rainawari hospital in Srinagar and a couple of mission hospitals in Anantnag and Baramulah but by and large it was Unani type of medicine that was in vogue in Kashmir and Raghunath Bazar in Jammu was full of vaids practicing ayurvedic medicine. Since then allopathic health care has gone a long way. Kashmir medical college besides giving birth to great institutions like SKIMS, JVMC, medical college Jammu and Batra medical college produced thousands of doctors working all over the world. Some have touched the zeniths in the field of medicine. Today we have a network of dispensaries health centers, sub district and district hospitals besides trauma hospitals all over the state. With the meager resources of the state it is undoubtedly an uphill task to run such a huge establishment.
Having said that health care system is an ongoing process of improvement all over the world and we should be no exception to that. I am in no way an expert to suggest as to how our health care system should improve but I would definitely like to share my thoughts with the present generation experts. In view of the fact that chronic diseases like hypertension and endocrine problems are alarmingly increasing and the costs for curative medicine are rising every day we need to concentrate on preventive and lifestyle medicine.
J&K state is by and large an agricultural state and most of our population lives in rural areas. So besides improving on our hospitals in urban areas we have to focus how we can cater our rural population to our best. There is no doubt that our hospitals dispensaries and PHCs lack properly trained staff and at the same time is understaffed. The first step we need to do is to have in house training system.
