FSU student heading to Africa with Peace Corps

During her quest, Ferree will form lasting friendships, learn French, learn about the African culture and will make a difference in the lives of many young boys and girls. Ferree will volunteer as a youth development coordinator. She will work with young girls teaching them the importance of school and will work with young boys teaching them their role in the community, family and relationships with women. Before beginning her duties, Ferree will participate in an 11-week intensive training session. The application process for the  Peace Corps was intense. Ferree started the more than 10-part application, which included essays, in July 2010 and was interviewed in October 2010. As soon as she learned she was accepted, she began the month-long process of making sure she was physically well enough to go on the trip. Her immunizations were all updated, her eyesight and hearing were tested, and she had dental work done. All Peace Corps volunteers receive comprehensive medical and dental benefits, which start with the coverage of vaccinations and anti-malarial prescription, which begins prior to departure, according to the Peace Corps website. Full medical insurance is provided during service. Volunteers are also covered by workers’ compensation.

School board approves plan for facility improvements

CUMBERLAND — The Allegany County Board of Education unanimously approved its Capital Improvement Plan on Friday morning, moving a step closer to the possibility of a new Allegany High School. The plan will now be sent to the state in an effort to obtain state funding to add to local funding, which county commissioners have placed on their CIP for a new school.
