Health insurance costs more, covers less
Millions of Americans who get their health insurance through their jobs will soon start the fun task of picking a health plan for 2012. If you’re one of them, you may be in for a rude awakening.
The average annual cost of an employer-sponsored family plan rose 9 percent in 2011, to an all-time high of $15,073, according to an annual survey of employers conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation, an independent research institute not related to the Kaiser health-insurance plan. The average worker contributes $4,129 toward that premium, another all-time high and more than double the average contribution of a decade ago.
To make matters worse, even as coverage costs more, it’s getting skimpier. Five years ago, only 10 percent of people covered by an employee health plan had an annual deductible of $1,000 or more, according to the Kaiser survey. This year, 31 percent do. In that same time span, the proportion with high-deductible plans more than quadrupled, from 4 percent to 17 percent.
All of which makes it more important than ever to review your options (if you have them) rather than simply defaulting to your current plan, says Sarah Thomas, vice president for public policy and communication with the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).
NCQA, an independent organization that accredits and measures the quality of health plans, has arranged with Consumer Reports to publish rankings of health-insurance plans in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia. That includes private plans that serve people who get coverage through a job or buy it on their own, as well as health-insurance plans for Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries.
The rankings will be available next week in the November issue of Consumer Reports and online at www.ConsumerReports/Health.org.
“These ratings are a mix of three different things,” Thomas says. “One, does the organization have good scores on responding to consumers. Two, does it work well with physicians to keep you well and take good care of you when you’re sick.A third part is the accreditation, which examines how a plan responds to complaints of people, processes calls, and his shop in the order with respect to things like ensuring that doctors have the network the powers they say they do.
