Chris Zinn: Time to support health-care reform

As a nurse in West Virginia, and as a mother and grandmother, I became an advocate of health reform.

I want my children, grandchildren and future generations to have access to affordable health care. It was something I took for granted when I lived in Britain, where universal health care is considered a fundamental human right.

It is difficult for me to understand the opposition to the goals of affordable Care Act, which was adopted in 2010. Many Americans are afraid that it will cost more and confused about how it will work.This legislation will extend health insurance coverage to 95 percent of U.S. citizens in 2016. It also allows you to control rising costs and regulate the insurance industry to provide more consumer protection. It's time for most of West Virginia to show their support for these changes that will improve health care in our state.

I have known the benefits of universal health coverage in Britain, and compare this with the economic difficulties and the suffering I witnessed in the high cost of care here in West Virginia.The current fragmented and inequitable system outcomes of health care in devastating consequences for families when a member has a chronic or serious illness.

In Britain, anyone can access the National Health Service by registering with a primary care physician. There is no charge for care provided to patients and people do not have to worry about losing their health coverage. This universal health care actually costs much less per capita than the U.S. system today.

The British NHS has been criticized for long waiting lists.However, there is no waiting time for emergency treatment and waiting times have recently been greatly reduced for elective surgery and non-urgent consultations. My family and friends in Britain were satisfied with the care they receive.

Following the lead of Britain and other nations, the Affordable Care Act aims to improve the health of the nation by providing more and better access to primary care. Well-coordinated primary care is more profitable than the use of emergency rooms, where uninsured Americans now seek care when their condition worsens, because they are not a doctor.When this care is uncompensated, the costs are transferred to those who are insured. This is one reason why the cost of health insurance premiums increased dramatically.
