HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP — Going to the hospital is stressful. That’s not news for patients, but for the local hospitals courting them, the race to increase business by adding stress-relieving amenities is just now heating up.“Who wants to come to a hospital?” asked Nancy Schlitter, who oversees the Oasis day spa at the new Capital Health Medical Center-Hopewell. “Nobody. You don’t know what a diagnosis might be. You don’t know what’s going to happen to you. Usually the treatment is impersonal. The machines are cold.”
Schlitter is heading up Capital Health’s efforts to defy those less favorable impressions by offering services such as the full-service day spa, where visitors can enjoy manicures, pedicures, facials and massages. Oasis held a promotional “Men’s Night” earlier this month in an effort to lure the more reluctant half of its target clientele with complimentary hand and arm massages.
“The whole feeling we want to give patients is that they are in a five-star hotel,” Schlitter said. “So we have put in amenities like the spa. We have a world-class art collection. All of the rooms are private. All of the beds face windows with views of the property.”
With five hospitals in Mercer County operated by four different health care organizations, and University Medical Center at Princeton scheduled to move to a new facility in Plainsboro in May, the race to attract patients has led to a push to expand amenities like spas, boutique shops and restaurants.
