New dates set for Medicare drug enrollment
Enrollment sessions setIowa's Senior Health Insurance Information Program, or SHIIP, has set up three informational sessions to discuss Medicare Part D enrollment in Scott County. The telephone number is (563) 421-1096.
You also can call the Generations Area Agency on Aging in Davenport and ask for Toni Nicoletto, the SHIIP counselor/coordinator. Her phone number is (563) 324-9085, Ext. 218.
Seniors in Clinton and Muscatine counties also are invited to contact the Generations agency, Nicoletto said, since there is a new emphasis on reaching out to older residents in more rural counties. The toll-free phone number is (800) 892-9085.
The informational sessions are:
- Wednesday, Oct 19 - 9 a.m. to noon at CASI, the Center for Active Seniors Inc., 1035 W. Kimberly Road, Davenport.
- Thursday, Nov. 10 - 1-4 p.m. at the Bettendorf Public Library, 2950 Learning Campus Drive.
- Tuesday, Nov. 22 - 9 a.m. to noon, also at the Bettendorf Public Library.
Darlene Mizlo's memory of her beloved sister helps guide the 84-year-old's decisions when it comes to prescription drug insurance today.
The Bettendorf woman helped her sister through some serious health setbacks and decided that her sibling's insurance coverage would also be the best choice for her among all the policies offered in the Medicare Part D program.
Mizlo has not changed her policy since she signed up for the plan five years ago. That's because it remains affordable, she said, adding that it is not the least-expensive choice among those that seniors face during the open-enrollment period for Part D coverage.
It's almost time to sign up for a plan. Open-enrollment dates for Part D have changed significantly and are now set from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. In previous years, open enrollment began a few weeks later and ended Dec. 31.

The 2012 Medicare drug plans will be on the government's website (www.medicare.gov) by Saturday, Oct. 1. Plans that do not intend to renew their contract with the government must notify their members by Sunday.
