Delta Air Lines Lays 200 Staff Off
Delta Air Lines, which is the second biggest airline in the US, has revealed that it will be laying off around 200 administrative workers. Many of the employees are stationed at the carrier’s headquarters in Atlanta, which is located near the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. The airline has an over 80,000-strong workforce and has been the biggest corporate player in the metro area.
The move follows the carrier offering early retirements and buyouts to staff earlier this year and receiving more than 2,000 volunteers. However, spokeswoman Keyra Lynn Johnson says these weren’t enough to satisfy the cost cuts the carrier was seeking from administrative workers.
Delta Air Lines has been reducing flight capacity, consolidating facilities and retiring older planes in order to adjust to higher fuel costs and a lifeless economy. The employees who are affected by this newest workforce cut have been notified over the last week and a half. Johnson says they will be leaving the airline over the next several months and will receive severance benefits, which includes travel privileges and health insurance.
Johnson also noted that Delta Air Lines doesn’t plan on laying off front-line staff – like flight attendants and airport agents. They aren’t just reducing headcount. She explained that they are cutting costs as a whole, partially because of higher fuel prices. Reducing headcount involuntarily at the company is really something they do as a last resort, she added.
The workforce reduction comes as Delta Air Lines announced a decline in traffic for the month of August. The carrier said on Tuesday that overall traffic fell 0.3%, while capacity was cut 0.8%. However, the airline saw an overall rise in load factor from 86.5% to 86.9%. Broken down, domestic traffic fell 1.8% year-over-year on a decrease in capacity by 2.6%, while load factor rose 0.7 points to 86.5%. International traffic rose 1.9% year-over-year with a 1.8% rise in capacity. Load factor for international operations increased to 87.5%.
