WU officials renew health plan
Friday was insurance day at the Washburn University Board of Regents meeting.
In a packed meeting at the KTWU-TV studio on campus, the board approved renewal of the university’s health plan, as well as ratification of purchase of the university’s property and liability policies.
And with the health insurance plan, which is through Blue Cross and Blue Shield, no plan changes occurred. There is a modest increase in premiums.
President Jerry Farley cited a recent USA Today article that said national annual health premiums have increased 9 percent. He also expressed pleasure with Washburn’s insurance situation.
“This increase is based upon our claims experience,” he said. “So we’ve been pretty healthy. And that’s amazing. Because we know costs have gone up, and so the recommendation of a less than 2 percent increase, generally speaking, means that we overcame the cost increases with less claims.”
Rick Anderson, vice president of administration and treasurer, said the rate adjustments between 1.8 and 2.5 percent — depending on coverage — are based off an actuarial study.
Despite many other plans around the country looking at larger increases, Anderson said Washburn will be able to add to its reserve funds, which sits at $2.3 million.
“We compared our plan in terms of the percentage Washburn pays versus the percentage the individual pays for those coverages as compared to the state plan and some others,” Anderson said. “And our individuals were bearing a bigger burden, so we were able to reduce the portion the individuals pay a little bit more for those coverages.”
Anderson said the annual claims for Washburn are in the $6.5 million to $7 million range.
“We don’t find many faculty members that want to come to Washburn because of our plan,” Farley said. “They usually come because of the institution and the salary.
“But if we don’t have a plan this competitive, they won’t come. So we think we are competitive, but it is not a gold-plated plan by any stretch.

ADHD – Dont Be Disqualified For Health Insurance | Articles On ...
There are also secondary concerns that arise as a result of this disease. For example, if a person gets in an accident due to an inability to concentrate, they need insurance to treat their injuries. The same is also true if sufferers turn to illegal drugs to alleviate their mental anguish. In this situation, healthcare is needed for recovery and emergency overdoses. The possibilities are never-ending, which is why finding affordable health insurance can be extremely challenging. ADHD is not a condition that can be treated without health insurance. The reason why is because numerous therapies and drugs are needed to help manage the condition.
When it comes to healthcare coverage, providers consider ADHD a pre-existing condition. Health insurance companies do not like dealing with these types of conditions because they fear it will hurt their bottom line. If they accept too many “sick” people, they may lose money having to pay enormous medical fees. Consequently, they end up punishing those who are already ill. This includes denying their application or charging higher fees. It doesn’t even matter if a person is healthy in every other area of their lives.
Find out how many doctor’s visits are covered per year, as well as which services will need to be pre-certified. It might also be a good idea to ask for a case manager. Establishing a good relationship with your case manager will help if your child’s claims ever get denied Next, call the insurance company and speak with them directly. Are there any pre-requisites for coverage? Some health plans require children with ADHD to seek treatment for as long as a year before they can receive health insurance coverage.
So, how can a person with ADHD get the coverage they need to manage their condition? One alternative could involve getting insurance through an employer. The same providers that turn a person down for an individual plan would welcome them with open arms on an employer-based group policy. The reason why is because the company already got their compensation through the employer. This means they have less to lose even on customers who require extensive medical care. And, since many group policies include mental health coverage, a recipient wouldn’t even have to pay a higher deductible.
